Myopia Management for Children & Teens

If your child’s glasses prescription keeps getting stronger each year, you’re not imagining it. Nearsightedness, or myopia, is on the rise in kids, especially with more screen time and less outdoor play. We offer evidence-based myopia management to help slow that progression, protect long-term eye health, and give parents peace of mind.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia is a condition in which close-up objects appear clear, but distant objects, like the whiteboard or road signs, look blurry. It occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it.

For many children, myopia begins between ages 6 and 12, and without treatment, it often worsens year after year. Glasses can correct the blur, but they don’t stop the underlying progression. That’s where myopia management comes in.

Why Myopia Management Matters

Myopia isn’t just about vision; it’s about health. As prescriptions increase, so does the risk of long-term eye problems. Children with high myopia have a greater lifetime risk of developing:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration

Early intervention helps reduce that risk. By slowing eye growth and stabilizing your child’s prescription, we’re not just helping them see more clearly today. We’re protecting what they’ll see for decades to come.

How We Treat Progressive Myopia At Child and Family Eye Care

A young girl is sleeping peacefully in her bedroom with a lit nightlight, a picture frame on the nightstand, and a star sticker on the wall.

At Child and Family Eye Care, we create personalized myopia control plans based on your child’s age, prescription history, lifestyle, and visual needs. Our approach is non-surgical, evidence-based, and adjusted over time as your child grows. Treatment options may include:

Ortho-K (Orthokeratology)

Specialized contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, allowing clear vision during the day without glasses or contacts. Ortho-k is ideal for active children and teens.

MiSight® 1-Day Soft Contact Lenses

FDA-approved daily disposable lenses designed to slow myopia progression in children. Comfortable, safe, and great for kids ready to wear daytime contacts.

Essilor Stellest™ Lenses

These specially designed spectacle lenses use advanced lens technology to slow myopia progression while providing clear vision. Stellest™ lenses are a strong option for younger children who aren’t ready for contact lenses or prefer to wear glasses full-time.

Lifestyle & Visual Habits Counseling

We talk with families about screen time, posture, reading habits, and outdoor activity, all of which can influence the rate of myopia progression.

We work with you to determine the best treatment combination, and we monitor progress carefully to ensure your child’s plan stays on track.

What to Expect from a Myopia Care Plan

Myopia management is a process, not a quick fix. But with the right tools and support, we can make it easy to manage and meaningful for your child’s long-term health. When you begin a myopia plan with us, you can expect:

  • A comprehensive baseline assessment to measure eye growth, prescription trends, and overall health.
  • A clear explanation of treatment options, with honest guidance on what’s right for your child.
  • Regular follow-ups to track progress and adjust as needed.
  • An open-door approach: we’re always available to answer questions and support your family along the way.

Most importantly, you’ll know your child’s eyes are being cared for by people who see them as more than a number and who are just as focused on their future as you are.
